Makerere University, Uganda

History

Established in 1922 as a humble technical college with a population of 16 male students, Makerere University was affiliated to the University of London until 1963 when it became one of the three constituent colleges of the University Of East Africa. The College soon began offering various other courses in Medical Care, Agriculture, Veterinary Sciences and Teacher Training. In 1937, Makerere developed into an Institution of Higher Education, offering post-secondary school certificate courses.  Twelve years later, it became a University College affiliated to the University of London.

With the establishment of the University of East Africa in 1963, Makerere ended its special relationship with the University of London and became a constituent college of the new University of East Africa. In July 1970, Makerere became an independent national University by an Act of Parliament, offering undergraduate and postgraduate studies leading to its own award in a variety of disciplines. This status continued until 2001 when the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act was enacted. .

Makerere University is one of the oldest universities in Africa offering a big range of Masters and doctorate degrees. It is also a very active centre for research. The University transitioned from the Faculty-based to the collegiate system on 1st July 2011 and as of December 2011, Makerere University officially transformed into a Collegiate University with Nine (9) Constituent Colleges and One (1) School, operating as semi-autonomous units of the University.

Makerere University is located on Makerere Hill which is one of the many hills on which Kampala, the Capital City of Uganda, is built. The main Campus is about 5 km to the North of the City Centre covering an area of 300 acres.
