Structure and content:

Ph.D. This is a 3-year (full-time) post-M.Phil. programme. Students must complete 6 semesters of Research Work (Thesis), 6 Advanced Research Seminars, and an Oral examination at the end of the programme. It may include 24 credit hours of taught courses from the courses listed in the M.Phil. programme as needed to undertake research work.  


M.Phil. The Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Medical Biochemistry is a 4-semester programme of 60 credit hours altogether, including a minimum of 24 credit hours of taught courses with specialisation in  Neural tube development, Cardiac muscle development and ultrastructure, Development/Structure of foetal, membranes in health and disease, Experimental  Embryology, Cytogenetics. Core courses include: Molecular aspects of Cell Biology,  Genetic Information; Storage,  Transmission and Expression, Biochemical Techniques, Molecular Biology Practicals, Seminar I, Molecular Cloning and Expression (Offered in the Department of Biochemistry, Legon). Recent Advances in Enzymology (Offered in the Department of Biochemistry, Legon). Biostatistics and Research Methods (offered in the School of Public Health). Elective courses include: Introduction to Microbiology and General Microbiology (Offered in the Department of Microbiology), Virology (offered in the Department of Microbiology), Pharmacogenetics (Offered in the Department. of Pharmacology), Pharmacoepidemiology  (Offered in the Department of Pharmacology), Drug Development and Evaluation (offered in the Department of Pharmacology), Molecular Biomarkers and Evaluation (offered in the Department of Biochemistry, Legon),  General,  Cellular  Gastrointestinal  Physiology  (offered  in the Department  of Physiology),  Characteristics  And Cellular Basis of Disease, Inflammation, Healing and Repair (Offered in the Department of Pathology).  Year 2 comprises of Seminar Presentation 2 of 3 credits and 30 credits for Thesis.
