The main objective of the Master of Science in Epidemiology to address challenges identified in Rwanda's epidemiological profile of morbidity and immortality which is dominated by transmitted diseases calls for staff trained in epidemiology, so that incidence and prevalence of diseases such as malaria, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and respiratory diseases, diarrheic diseases and diseases with epidemic potential can be reduced. Also following the country's decentralisation policy which implies that training and capacity building of staff from health sector be enhanced in as fat as epidemiology is concerned. Structure and content:
M.Sc. program is structured in 11 modules that are all satisfactorily covered in two years Modules and their respective units covered: Epidemiology and Biostatistics; Computing, Introduction to Public Health, Epidemiology l, Biostatistics I & Demography. Management of Quality of Health Systems; Management of Health Information System, Health Service Quality Assurance, Management of Resource of Health Services & IT and GIS in Health System Jnformation Management. Advanced Analytical Method (Integrated Exercises); Biostatistics II, Epidemiology II & Modeling II. Field Work Placement 1,2 & 3 (Research protocol development and submission to the NURSPH RCTT/IRB). Advanced Research Method; Operational and Evaluative Research, Research Ethics, Qualitative Research Methods, Quantitative Research Methods & Scientific Communication Health Context in Epidemiology; Community Development and Health, Occupational Health and Disease, Environmental Health & Disaster management Preparedness and Planning. Public Health Priority Interventions; Burden of Disease, Communicable Disease, Non Communicable Disease, Reproductive Health, Nutrition and Health & Monitoring and Evaluation of Health Programs. Health Policy and Planning; Health Policy and Cooperation in Health, Health Planning, Health Economics & Applied Health Economics. Applied Epidemiology; Epidemic Surveillance, Forensic/ Trauma Epidemiology, Special Epideiological Methods & Epistat.
Assessment methods: Progressive Assessment; For each module a progressive mark shall be awarded by the instructor using a set of criteria. These criteria may include aspects such as group work, general participation, commitment, answering questions, and general professional conduct during class time. A progressive mark shall be awarded out of 10% of the overall module score. Written Examination; At the end of each module, a written examination shall be administered to the trainees. The score from all the written tests from the course units or end of module examination shall be weighted according to the duratior of the unit for a score out ofa total 30% of the overall module score. Field Assignment; The oral presentation and repott from the field assignment shall be evaluated by two independent faculty members and awarded a mark out of 100% of each field work placement module score. Extemal Evaluation; The overall assessment for a module shall be on the basis of the trainee obtaining at least 60% of the required marks from progressive and written assessments, as well as at least 60% of the required field marks with tllf exception of modules for which the written and progressive marks shall make up to 100%. A trainee who fails to fulfill any of the two requirements above shall be expected to re-take the module or re-submit the field assignment as the case may be. There shall be no supplementary examination.

The programme was validated by NUR Senate and Board of Directors Oct 2009, High Education Council and finally approved by Cabinet.
