Structure and Content:

Ph.D. This is 3-5 year post-M.Phil. research programme and may require that candidates undertake taught courses from the courses listed in the M.Phil. programme. It also requires that candidates attend and present seminars at their department. A Ph.D. candidate who is unable to obtain a pass grade in a seminar presentation shall be granted the opportunity to present another seminar. Ai??M. Phil. The programme is structured to take a period of two (2) years. The first year comprises taught courses for two semesters. The second year is devoted to research from an area of specialization. The core courses, taken by all candidates include Soil, Air and Water Quality, Environmental Economics, Human Population and Urbanization, Environmental law, Remote Sensing and Environmental Impact Assessment and the Electives include Environmental Chemistry, Atmospheric and Environmental Physics, Water Resources Management, Environmental Geology and Forest Resource Management. Candidates are required to choose a minimum of two out of the elective courses. A minimum of 30 to a maximum of 36 credits is required for the first year. Ai??Year 2 is made up of a total of 36 credits; 30 credits for Thesis and 3 credits each for Seminars I and II.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. The individual is provided with the ability to select from relevant varying information, the required solution sets to a problem.
  2. Apart from the knowledge it entails, the environmental science course enables one to decisively contribute to interdisciplinary relationships and analyses that may not directly relate to environmental issues.
  3. Training in this field of study enables the individual to become professionally and technically qualified to deal with all forms of problems involved in the improvement and management of the environment.
